MK Guide Recommends

Nicknamed Akarenga (Red Brick), the former Hokkaido Government Office stands as a striking Western-style landmark in downtown Sapporo. Built in 1888 and inspired by American brick architecture of the 19th century, the building played a vital role as an administrative center during Hokkaido’s frontier expansion. Today, the well-preserved structure hosts rotating exhibits on Hokkaido’s history, international relations, and natural environment—free for the public. Behind its grand turrets and arched windows is a peaceful garden with seasonal flowers, a pond, and quiet benches—making it a favorite spot for walks year-round, especially during autumn’s golden ginkgo display. The site connects Hokkaido’s pioneering past with the civic life of contemporary Sapporo.
