アメ横商店街

Ueno Ameyoko Shopping Street

A sensory overload of shouting vendors, street snacks, and bargain bins—Tokyo’s liveliest open-air market runs loud beneath the Yamanote Line.

Attraction

Street Market, Bargain Shopping, Local Eats

MK Guide Recommends

Ameyoko (short for “Ameya Yokocho” or “Candy Shop Alley”) began as a black market after WWII and has grown into one of Tokyo’s most iconic street bazaars. Sandwiched between Ueno and Okachimachi Stations, this densely packed corridor is lined with hundreds of stalls selling everything from dried seafood and spices to sneakers, cosmetics, and gold jewelry. Prices are negotiable, English is sometimes spoken, and the pace is chaotic in the best way. Locals stop for street yakitori, skewered fruit, or donburi bowls at longtime vendors, while tourists browse for gifts and vintage finds. It’s a crash course in Tokyo’s street-level commerce—raw, colorful, and unfiltered.
