MK Guide Recommends

Kawarayaji is one of Shiga’s oldest and most spiritually important temples, with roots stretching back over 1,300 years. Established during the Nara period and later linked to the Rinzai Zen sect, the temple houses Kannon Bosatsu, the bodhisattva of compassion, and is the 32nd stop on the Saigoku Kannon Pilgrimage, Japan’s oldest sacred circuit. Its wooden buildings, surrounded by plum trees, hydrangeas, and vibrant autumn maples, showcase the quiet dignity of traditional Japanese temple architecture. Beyond its spiritual significance, Kawarayaji holds a rich historical legacy, having endured fires, wars, and restorations while maintaining a peaceful harmony between faith, nature, and time.
