MK Guide Recommends

Founded in 963 by the wandering monk Kuya Shonin, Rokuharamitsuji Temple has a history closely linked to both Buddhist devotion and Kyoto’s political upheavals. Once the headquarters of the powerful Taira clan, the temple has survived fire, war, and reconstruction, maintaining its role as a protector of Higashiyama. Inside, visitors see a seated statue of Kuya Shonin chanting the nenbutsu, along with statues designated Important Cultural Properties, including fierce guardians and Amida images central to Pure Land worship. The temple’s name comes from the “six paramitas” (perfections) of Buddhism, reflecting its spiritual roots. Though smaller than Kyoto’s larger temples, Rokuharamitsuji offers an intimate look into the city’s religious and artistic heritage, connecting ascetic practice, political history, and lasting faith.
