Giōji is steeped in history and literature, notably linked to the tale of Giō, a dancer who, after a tragic love affair with the Heike Clan's leader Taira no Kiyomori, sought solace here as a Buddhist nun. Wooden statues of Giō, her family, and Kiyomori are enshrined within, commemorating this poignant story.
