Chinkoku-ji is one of northern Kyushu’s oldest and most revered Shingon temples, founded in 806 CE by the Buddhist monk Kūkai (Kōbō Daishi) upon his return from China. Built at the base of Mt. Kōya in Munakata, the temple was established to pray for the peace and protection of the nation—its name meaning “Temple to Pacify the Country.” Within its peaceful, forested grounds stand five main halls dedicated to the Five Great Buddhas, while walking paths lead to panoramic views overlooking the sea. Chinkoku-ji remains a vibrant center of devotion and meditation, where ancient rituals like goma fire ceremonies are still performed amid the mountain’s tranquility. Especially beautiful in spring and early summer, the temple offers visitors a unique mix of spiritual depth, natural beauty, and historical significance.
