MK Guide Recommends

Ryogoku Kokugikan is more than just an arena—it’s the heart of professional sumo. Located in Tokyo’s Sumida Ward, just steps from Ryogoku Station, this large venue accommodates over 10,000 spectators and hosts three of the six annual Grand Sumo Tournaments. Even outside tournament season, the building’s traditional design and vibrant atmosphere attract visitors year-round. Inside, the dohyō (sumo ring) is the main focus beneath a suspended wooden canopy inspired by a Shinto shrine, highlighting the sport’s sacred roots. Visitors can explore the on-site Sumo Museum, which displays historical artifacts, wrestler profiles, and rare memorabilia. During tournaments, spectators can enjoy chanko-nabe (sumo stew), cheer for rikishi ringside, and observe ceremonial rituals that have remained unchanged for centuries. Whether you're a dedicated fan or just curious, Ryogoku Kokugikan provides one of the most immersive experiences into Japanese culture and sporting spirit.
