Omoide Yokocho

A nostalgic postwar alleyway packed with smoky yakitori joints, narrow stools, and the scent of grilled memory.

Attraction

Food Street, Izakaya Alley, Retro Tokyo, Nightlife

MK Guide Recommends

Omoide Yokocho—literally “Memory Lane”—is a living slice of postwar Tokyo preserved in neon and smoke. Wedged beside Shinjuku Station’s west exit, this atmospheric alley is home to dozens of compact food stalls and izakayas serving grilled skewers, nikomi stews, draft beer, and sake under vintage signage. Locals know it as “Shonben Yokocho” (“Piss Alley”) for its hard-drinking past, but these days it draws tourists and Tokyoites alike looking for no-frills flavor and retro charm. Expect narrow walkways, elbow-to-elbow seating, and menus in hand-scrawled Japanese. Come for the yakitori, stay for the stories embedded in every oil-stained wall.
