MK Guide Recommends

Tucked away in a peaceful corner near the Sumida River in eastern Asakusa, Imado Shrine is a modest yet culturally rich site often visited for two main reasons: romantic blessings and lucky cats. Believed to be one of the origins of the maneki-neko (beckoning cat) legend, the shrine features cat motifs—from ceramic statues to illustrated ema prayer boards—that attract both spiritual pilgrims and feline enthusiasts. It is also known as a musubi jinja (a matchmaking shrine), with many couples coming to pray for a strong relationship or a future partner. The shrine enshrines the deities Izanagi and Izanami, the mythic first couple of Japan, symbolically linking it to harmony and marriage. With its quiet, residential setting and playful charm, Imado Shrine provides a more intimate and whimsical alternative to the larger, more prominent sites in Asakusa.
