Spanning 54 hectares in the forested outskirts of Sapporo, the Historical Village of Hokkaido showcases the island’s pioneering past through a living architectural collection. More than 60 authentic structures—from thatched-roof farmhouses and fishing lodges to Meiji-era schools, train stations, police boxes, and shops—have been moved here from across Hokkaido. Set along gravel roads and forest pathways, the village is divided into four themed zones: Town, Fishing Village, Farm Village, and Mountain Village. Visitors can enter most buildings, many furnished with period pieces, providing a tactile glimpse into frontier life. In winter, horse-drawn sleigh rides follow routes once vital to trade and survival.
