MK Guide Recommends

Maruyama Park, established in 1886, is Kyoto’s oldest public park and a favorite seasonal retreat. Next to Yasaka Shrine, the park is famous for its large shidarezakura (weeping cherry tree), which attracts crowds during hanami season when the grounds shimmer with lanterns and blossoms. Beyond spring, Maruyama features winding paths, ponds, and teahouses that change with each season, from summer greenery to fall colors and winter calm. Popular with both locals and visitors, the park combines natural beauty with cultural activities, often hosting festivals, evening walks, and traditional meals at nearby tea pavilions. As a companion to Yasaka Shrine and the Higashiyama district, Maruyama Park grounds Kyoto’s seasonal beauty in a welcoming urban sanctuary.
