MK Guide Recommends

Founded in 1202 by the monk Eisai, who introduced Rinzai Zen and tea culture to Japan, Kenninji Temple stands as Kyoto’s oldest Zen temple. Its expansive grounds balance contemplation and artistry, featuring dry rock gardens, moss gardens, and teahouses that offer spaces of stillness. The temple’s interior showcases important cultural treasures, including fusuma screen paintings by Tawaraya Sōtatsu and the striking Twin Dragons ceiling mural, a modern masterpiece created for the temple’s 800th anniversary. Located at the southern end of Hanamikoji Street in Gion, Kenninji provides both a peaceful retreat and a gateway into Kyoto’s Zen heritage, where meditation, art, and history come together.
