MK Guide Recommends

Daigo-ji Temple, nestled in the southeast hills of Kyoto, is a Shingon Buddhist sanctuary devoted to Yakushi Nyorai, the Buddha of Healing. Established in the early Heian period, the temple's name—Daigo, meaning "ghee" or the essence—reflects its role as a spiritual distillation of Buddhist truth. The vast grounds span from the base of the mountain to its summit, with the lower precinct featuring the five-story pagoda—Kyoto's oldest surviving wooden building—and a landscaped garden that erupts in vivid color during cherry blossom and autumn foliage seasons. Visitors can explore the Sanboin residence, famous for its Momoyama-period architecture and garden designed by Toyotomi Hideyoshi himself. The upper temple, accessible via a hiking trail, offers solitude and panoramic views. Daigo-ji is a profound journey into Japan’s sacred heritage, blending esoteric ritual, imperial legacy, and natural beauty.
