MK Guide Recommends

Chion-in Temple serves as the headquarters of the Jōdo (Pure Land) sect of Buddhism and is one of Kyoto’s most impressive temple complexes. Founded in the 13th century on the site where Honen, the sect’s founder, once taught, Chion-in showcases the grandeur of Pure Land devotion through monumental architecture and peaceful gardens. Its Sanmon Gate, the largest wooden gate in Japan, sets the tone for the extensive hillside grounds, which include the main Mieidō Hall, the ornate Amida Hall, and cultural treasures like temple bells and painted screens. Seasonal gardens and quiet paths balance the temple’s size with peaceful spaces for reflection, while sweeping views over Higashiyama ground visitors in Kyoto’s spiritual landscape. Both pilgrimage site and cultural landmark, Chion-in continues to embody centuries of prayer and tradition.
