MK Guide Recommends

Located in the heart of Hyogo's Takarazuka City, the Takarazuka Grand Theater (宝塚大劇場) is more than just a performance space—it’s the spiritual home of one of Japan’s most enduring cultural phenomena: the Takarazuka Revue. Founded in 1913 by Hankyu Railway's Ichizō Kobayashi, the Revue is famous for its lavish, Broadway-style musicals, dazzling costumes, and gender-bending performances—where women perform both male and female roles with theatrical flair and discipline. The Grand Theater, which reopened in 1993 after extensive renovations, features a 2,550-seat auditorium, a dedicated rehearsal hall, and the Takarazuka Revue Hall of Fame. Each season offers rotating productions from the troupe’s five divisions, with themes spanning European operettas, samurai dramas, and manga adaptations. Visiting here is not just a spectacle but an immersion into a uniquely Japanese reinterpretation of theater, gender roles, and artistic excellence.
