MK Guide Recommends

Nicknamed the “Frog Temple,” Nyoirinji in Ogori, Fukuoka combines peaceful Buddhist worship with a playful charm. What starts as a quiet temple dedicated to Nyoirin Kannon quickly transforms into a surreal display of over 10,000 frog figurines scattered across the grounds—on steps, among stone lanterns, and beside mossy paths. In Japanese, “kaeru” means both “frog” and “to return,” and the temple embraces this wordplay to symbolize safe returns, whether from travel, illness, or life’s detours. The lush grounds, shaded by maple trees and quiet gardens, offer a peaceful visit all year round, especially during hydrangea season in early summer. While the atmosphere feels lighthearted, the temple maintains a sense of reverence, presenting a unique blend of Buddhist tradition and local folklore.
