MK Guide Recommends

Shōhō-ji Temple is a historic Tendai Buddhist temple located on Mount Iwama in southern Shiga. Established during the Nara period by monk Gyōki and later restored by Saichō, it enshrines Nyoirin Kannon Bosatsu, the wish-fulfilling form of the bodhisattva of compassion. As the 12th stop on the Saigoku 33 Kannon Pilgrimage, Iwama-dera has been welcoming pilgrims for over a thousand years seeking blessings of mercy and fulfillment. Visitors walk along a stone path through quiet cedar forests before reaching the main hall, where expansive views of Lake Biwa reward their effort. The temple’s natural beauty changes with each season—from cherry blossoms to vibrant autumn maples—offering both spiritual and visual peace in perfect harmony.
