MK Guide Recommends

Spanning 54 hectares in the forested outskirts of Sapporo, the Historical Village of Hokkaido showcases the island’s pioneering past through a living architectural collection. More than 60 authentic structures—from thatched-roof farmhouses and fishing lodges to Meiji-era schools, train stations, police boxes, and shops—have been moved here from across Hokkaido. Set along gravel roads and forest pathways, the village is divided into four themed zones: Town, Fishing Village, Farm Village, and Mountain Village. Visitors can enter most buildings, many furnished with period pieces, providing a tactile glimpse into frontier life. In winter, horse-drawn sleigh rides follow routes once vital to trade and survival. Operated by the Hokkaido Museum, the park offers rare insight into the rugged lifestyle that shaped Japan’s northern frontier, making it a must-see for history enthusiasts, families, and anyone interested in Japan’s journey to modernization.
