MK Guide Recommends

Hōheikyō Hot Spring is a cherished mountain retreat nestled deep within Jōzankei’s gorge—a peaceful escape less than an hour from Sapporo, yet worlds apart in atmosphere. Famous for its spacious rotenburo (outdoor bath), the facility uses 100% natural hot spring water that flows freely without filtration or additives. The mineral-rich waters soothe both body and mind as you soak, surrounded by trees that turn vibrant red and gold in autumn or become frosted white in winter. The onsen takes pride in maintaining a sulfur-free, sodium chloride spring that’s gentle on the skin. Inside, there are simple amenities and an indoor bath, but the main attraction remains the outdoor tub with scenic forest views. Unusually for an onsen, Hōheikyō also features a surprisingly popular Indian curry restaurant, adding a delightful culinary surprise to the experience.
