MK Guide Recommends

Nestled between modern buildings in central Sakae, Wakamiya Hachiman Shrine ranks among Nagoya’s oldest and most revered Shinto sites. Tracing back to the early Edo period, the shrine venerates Hachiman, the god of war and protector of the people—particularly important given its historical role as a guardian of castle towns. Although the grounds are modest, the atmosphere is powerful, with pristine architecture, rhythmic drumming during rituals, and a large stone torii set against the city skyline. The shrine becomes especially lively each May during the Wakamiya Festival (Wakamiya Matsuri), one of Nagoya’s three major traditional festivals, featuring elaborate floats, portable shrines, and street performances. For visitors looking for a quick yet meaningful spiritual experience near the city center, Wakamiya Hachiman offers a blend of history and tranquility amid the bustling urban environment.
