MK Guide Recommends

Jōnangū Shrine, located in Kyoto’s Fushimi Ward, is a serene spiritual site blending traditional Shinto architecture with lush, seasonally shifting gardens. Originally built over a thousand years ago, this shrine served the Imperial family for purification rites before travel. Today, it’s most beloved for its Haru no Niwa (Spring Garden), where plum blossoms and camellias bloom in succession, followed by wisteria and irises in late spring. The grounds also feature a tea ceremony house and a moss garden designed for quiet reflection. Jōnangū is less visited than Kyoto’s major shrines, making it a peaceful alternative for those seeking beauty without the crowds. Popular for its floral festivals and omamori charms, it captures the essence of Shinto harmony with nature in every season.
