MK Guide Recommends

Higashiyama Jisho-ji, commonly known as Ginkaku-ji or the Silver Pavilion, is a prominent Zen Buddhist temple in Kyoto's Higashiyama district. Built in 1482 by shogun Ashikaga Yoshimasa as a retirement villa, it was converted into a temple after his death. The temple is renowned for its understated elegance and the wabi-sabi aesthetic, representing simplicity and beauty in imperfection. Visitors can explore its meticulously maintained moss garden, dry sand garden known as the "Sea of Silver Sand," and the iconic Silver Pavilion, which reflects the moonlight to give a silvery appearance. The temple grounds offer a peaceful stroll through scenic landscapes, making it a must-visit destination in Kyoto.
