Tucked in the misty foothills of Kurama, Hakuryū-en Garden is one of Kyoto’s most elusive and spiritually charged landscapes. Originally a private retreat owned by the Hasegawa textile family, the garden opened to limited public entry only in recent years. Carefully maintained moss paths weave through cedar groves, waterfalls, and stone lanterns, offering visitors a hushed, sacred stillness untouched by the crowds of central Kyoto. Admission is restricted to a small number of guests per day, preserving the site’s sense of invitation and retreat. Best visited in autumn for its glowing maples or early summer when the moss reaches peak vividness, Hakuryū-en is less a place to see and more a place to feel.
