MK Guide Recommends

Chishakuin Temple serves as the headquarters of the Chisan branch of Shingon Buddhism and maintains a rich tradition of ritual and scholarship. Established in the late 16th century and expanded with the support of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, the temple is especially famous for its Japanese art treasures, including stunning fusuma paintings of flowers and landscapes by Tohaku Hasegawa and his school. Its walking garden, featuring a pond that reflects maples and azaleas, is regarded as one of Kyoto’s finest examples of landscape design, harmonizing natural beauty with spiritual significance. Although less crowded than nearby attractions, Chishakuin offers a peaceful experience where art, faith, and garden aesthetics come together, making it a meaningful stop in Higashiyama.
