MK Guide Recommends

Nestled in the historic Adashino area of Kyoto's Arashiyama district, Adashino Nenbutsuji Temple offers a profound glimpse into Japan's spiritual heritage. Established over 1,200 years ago by the revered monk Kūkai, the temple stands on grounds historically used for funeral rites since the Heian period. The temple's centerpiece, "Sai no Kawara," features around 8,000 stone statues and pagodas, each representing souls once laid to rest in the area. These markers, collected and preserved with the community's dedication, serve as a solemn tribute to the transient nature of life. Visitors can also explore a tranquil bamboo grove within the temple grounds, providing a serene backdrop for reflection.
