MK Guide Recommends

Established in 1934 by Jihei Kano, the seventh president of Hakutsuru Sake Brewing Company, the Hakutsuru Fine Art Museum is one of Japan's premier private art institutions. The museum's collection encompasses approximately 1,450 works, featuring ancient Chinese bronzes, ceramics, silverware, mirrors, jewelry, calligraphy, and paintings. Notably, the museum houses two National Treasures: two Nara-period scrolls from the "Sutra of the Wise and Foolish" attributed to Emperor Shōmu, and seventy-one scrolls spanning from the Nara to Edo periods of the "Instruction Manual on the Nirvana Sutra." The main building, reflecting a harmonious blend of Eastern and Western architectural styles, is a celebrated structure from the Shōwa era and is recognized as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property. In 1995, an annex was added to commemorate the museum's 60th anniversary, focusing on Near Eastern carpets, making it Japan's pioneering facility in this domain.
